A non-food food post
Up to this point on my blog I’ve kept my post mainly on food, but I decided to venture out a little and do a non-food food post. I know that sounds odd, so allow me to explain. If you know my hubs you already are familiar with his love of antiques and finding interesting buys. He has a knack of finding both beautiful and one of a kind items so I continue to encourage his shopping habit.
In San Diego there are a couple of antique and specialty stores that we hit up every few months to see if anything strikes an interest. A few months back we were at Architectural Salvage of San Diego and found these large oval-shaped wooden bowls. The bowls looked pretty old; after speaking with the store manager, he told us they were Danish bread bowls that allowed large quantities of dough to rise before cooking. Even though we weren’t sure what to do with this piece,
Initially the bowl sat outside on our table for a few weeks, but the weather started taking its toll on the wood so we moved it into the garage. It then sat in the garage for a couple months since I still wasn’t sure what to do with it. I can’t remember who (Greg or I) came up with the idea to bring it into the house, but it ended up finding a home on our formal dining table. It sat there for a few weeks (again) before I realized it was a great way to decorate for the changing seasons. Since it was summertime I went with a pastel theme and used pears, apples and some flower fillers to usher
Fast forward to fall! I love fall. It’s my favorite time of year in San Diego. Fall days bring crisp mornings, sunny warm days, and cool evenings, which are perfect for building outdoor fires. I start bugging the hubs to bring down the fall décor literally right after labor day so I can begin decorating the house.
This was the first fall with my beloved dough bowl so I was super excited about decorating it. I made a beeline to Michael’s and came home with a bounty of ideas for the table topper. I hope my love for fall, and this bowl design, inspires you to bring in the season too!
